When Kawasaki won our 1000cc sportbike comparison with its then-new 2004 ZX-10R, it defeated some pretty stiff competition, including Yamaha’s R-1, Honda’s CBR1000RR and the traditional class leader, the Suzuki GSX-R1000. The ZX-10R was largely unchanged in 2005. This prior generation bike provided some great thrills during testing, and its razor sharp reflexes were never misinterpreted by our staff as excessive nervousness or head shake. The bike simply did what you asked of it, and it did it without any hesitation.

September 23, 2005 For several years now, the 178bhp Kawasaki ZX12 has had the most horsepower of any production motorcycle, though it has played second fiddle to the 175 bhp Suzuki GSX1300 Hayabusa (named after the Japanese Peregrine falcon, one of the few animals on the planet which can travel at 300km per hour which it does during a dive) because the Hayabusa has a higher top speed – the Suzuki’s aerodynamics enable it to more than make up for the slight horsepower deficit and it has now held the title of the world’s fastest production motorcycle for six years since it launched.

The ZX-12R comes not to praise its predecessor but to bury him. Although they share the same name, the Maximum Ninja you see inhaling fine mountain swervery on this page shares few functional similarities with the bike ordained to be the fastest on the planet two years ago. This is a different time and place. The speed wars of 2000 fell victim to international detente, putting a 186-mph lid on fast sportbikes sold by those who wish to keep selling fast sportbikes.
